Field Trip #4: Reventador Volcano

 

5 Days / 4 Nights (Oct. 6 - 10)

Oct. 06

8am: Departure from Quito to Reventador. Stops along the way. Lunch box for the route.
6 pm: Expected arrival to Hotel Reventador.
7 pm: Dinner at hotel
8 pm – 10 pm: Weather permitting, observation of Reventador’s surficial activity from the hotel. Overnight stay at the hotel.
Does not include breakfast.


Oct. 07

7 am: Breakfast
9 am: The hiking towards the Azuela campsite begins. About a 4 hours hike.
12 pm – 1 pm: Lunch at the campsite.
1 pm – 6 pm: Afternoon activities:
   - (Part I) Seismo-acoustic experiments. Looking at the current internal and surficial activity of the volcano.
   - Maintenance of an infrasound array close to the campsite.
   - Informal talk about the twenty years of activity of Volcán Reventador.
   - Observation of surficial activity and collection of thermal and visual images.
Dinner and overnight stay at the Azuela campsite.

Oct. 08

8 am – 12:00 pm: Morning activities:
- Observation of surficial activity and collection of thermal and visual images
- (Part II) Seismo-acoustic experiments. Looking at the current internal and surficial activity of the volcano.
12 pm: Lunch
1 pm- 5 pm: Return to the hotel. About 4 hours hike.
Breakfast and Lunch included


Oct. 09

8 am – 12 pm: talks and posters at the hotel. Topic: “geophysical and geologic observations of Volcán Reventador”.
Afternoon: Tour to nearby waterfalls.
7 pm: Dinner
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included


Oct. 10

7 am: Breakfast
8 am: Return to Quito.
Breakfast included

Doesn’t Include:

  • Additional beverages or snacks
  • Light rain poncho & Large Knapsack to carry all your gear
  • Sleeping Bag

 

Notes:

  • The hike up to the Caldera is strenuous. Every person must carry their own sleeping bag & mat.
  • Due to erosion close to Reventador volcano, the main road is closed and the alternate road is longer. Expect @10 hour drive.
  • There are limited funds to help students participate in this workshop.
